Declaring a major in Chemistry
- Current students interested in the Chemistry major should connect with a major advisor as soon as possible.
- Students declare majors by the end of sophomore year or at 45 earned credits
*Pre-Health Students: Which Organic Chemistry course should you take: 300 or 303?
- CHEM 300, 400-Fundamentals of Organic Chemistry and Advanced Organic Chemistry is recommended for students interested in a chemistry major, medical school or a more in depth, rigorous treatment of the subject. The first semester, 300, does not serve as a prerequisite for CHEM 380, Biochemistry. The second semester does.
- CHEM 303-Survey of Organic Chemistry is a one semester course that covers the essentials of organic chemistry. It is recommended for students that only need one course in Organic Chemistry for their major or for admission into selected professional graduate programs. It counts as a prerequisite for CHEM 380, Biochemistry.
Course Planning for Chemistry

- Courses to complete in the first year, in order to graduate in four years
- CHEM 220+Lab and CHEM 230+Lab (fall/spring sequence only)
- MATH 125 and 226* (offered every semester)
*Need math placement level 2 or higher. If math level 1, prioritize MATH 122 and 125 in the first year and then take Chem 220 and CHEM 230 in the second year.
- Courses to complete in the second year, in order to graduate in four years
- Organic Chemistry*
- CHEM 300+Lab and CHEM 400+Lab (fall/spring sequence only) or
- CHEM 303 (offered both semesters)
- 1 year of physics recommended but it can be taken third year if necessary
- PHYS 202 and 204 (fall/spring sequence only) or
- PHYS 232 and 242 (fall spring sequence only)
