°ÅÀÖÊÓƵ Band Project

Paragraphs

The °ÅÀÖÊÓƵ Band Project is a partnership between college students learning how to teach and school-aged students learning how to play woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments. Through this partnership, the preparation of band teachers improves while the number of young band musicians increases, both positively affecting the quality of available educational opportunities in our community. Students are taught by highly qualified and experienced university faculty and undergraduate students (teachers-in-preparation) who work under the close supervision of faculty.

The °ÅÀÖÊÓƵ Band Project provides high quality and affordable music instruction for beginning woodwind, brass, and percussion students, including flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, and percussion. The program offers private lessons and small group instruction.

Registration and payment deadline

Registration for Spring 2026 is limited to the students who participated in Band Project during the fall semester of 2025. Registration will open back up on Monday August 3, 2026 to new participants!

Beginning Band

These small group classes or private lessons at the beginning band level are designed for beginning students 6th grade and older who have never played band instruments or are enrolled in beginning band at their school, and would like to learn a new instrument.

Intermediate Band

These small group classes or private lessons at the intermediate band level are designed for students with one to two years of experience playing the woodwind, brass or percussion instruments listed above.

Our Mission Statement

The °ÅÀÖÊÓƵ Band Project is dedicated to:

  • Improving the quality of band teachers’ preparation through integrated
    learning.
  • Providing quality and affordable instrumental education to school-age students of all socio-economic and racial backgrounds.
  • Enhancing the quality of life in our community.

For Our Students and Parents

By participating in Band Project, students in 4th through 12th grade learn how to play woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments from our teachers-in-preparation and our master teacher through small group classes and individual lessons. Commitment to this program will enable students to progress from a beginner to an intermediate and eventually to an advanced instrumentalist.

We offer numerous ways for our students to grow as musicians such as:

  • Beginning Band Instruction
  • Intermediate Band Instruction
  • High School Band Instruction

For Our Teachers

The teachers in Band Project are college students enrolled at °ÅÀÖÊÓƵ who are interested in learning how to teach band instruments to younger students. Student-teachers in Band Project take pedagogy classes and meet regularly with the master teacher, who supervises and advises their weekly classes. They are actively involved in recruitment and communication with parents and they help plan for teaching each week.

Students are paid for their preparation and teaching time, and they gain experience and develop their expertise in teaching music in learning environments that mimic public school teaching situations. The Band Project at °ÅÀÖÊÓƵ is open to ALL students who are playing in the Pacific Symphonic Band and/or Pacific Philharmonic Orchestra regardless of major/minor.
