Admission Requirements

• Eligibility: A bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution is required. While an application may be submitted while the degree is in progress, it must be completed prior to matriculation into the MSVS program.
• Prerequisites: Applicants must have completed all prerequisite coursework with a grade of “C” or higher in each subject.
• GRE (Optional): Submission of an official Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is optional. While not required for admission, providing an official GRE report taken within the last five years can strengthen an application by providing additional evidence of academic readiness. There is no minimum GRE score requirement. Scores should be submitted using institution code 4601.
• English Proficiency: Non-native English speakers must demonstrate proof of English proficiency. See more details about English proficiency.

The Selection Process

Enrollment in the PhD in Vision Science Programs is highly competitive and limited. The Vision Science Programs (VSP) Committee employs a holistic review process, evaluating candidates based on a comprehensive range of factors: 

• Academic Excellence: Overall undergraduate, graduate, and/or professional record.
• Professional Potential: Performance during the personal interview, with emphasis on the ability to articulate scientific concepts and interests.
• Writing and Communication: Quality of the application essay, research interests, and other writing samples.
• Recommendations: Strong support from letters of recommendation and the Reference Survey, especially from mentors familiar with the applicant's research aptitude.
• Experience: Prior engagement in research initiatives, laboratory techniques, or clinical care.
• Vocation: A demonstration of long-term commitment to pursuing a career in independent vision science research or academia.

Interview and Notification

Selected applicants who pass the initial review will be invited to an interview. Admission decisions are generally finalized within two weeks following the interview. Applicants will be officially notified of their status via email.

All applications must be submitted through the . To be considered for admission, your application must include the following:

• Curriculum Vitae (CV): A current summary of your academic background, research experience, and professional achievements.
• Personal Essay: A statement describing your motivation for pursuing a PhD in Vision Science. Your essay should articulate your long-term career objectives, specific research interests, and how your academic background has prepared you for independent scholarly inquiry.
• Official Transcripts: Official transcripts from every college and university attended. 
  • International Applicants: For degrees from a non-U.S.-accredited institution, an official course-by-course credentials evaluation report (e.g., WES or ECE) is required to verify degree equivalence.
  • Current Pacific Students: Submit an unofficial copy of your most recent ������Ƶ transcript to verify a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
• Letter of Recommendation: 
  • Standard Applicants: Two letters are required from individuals who have supervised your research or academic work. At least one letter must be from a professor who taught you in college. Recommenders must also complete the ������Ƶ Applicant Evaluation Form. 
  • Current Pacific students: Only one recommendation is required.
• Proof of English Proficiency: Official Documentation of English language proficiency is required. 
  • Note: This requirement is waived for currently enrolled ������Ƶ OD students and applicants who hold an OD degree.
• Application Fee: $38. 

International Partnerships (MOU)

Applicants from institutions with a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) or established special arrangements with the ������Ƶ College of Optometry should contact the Program Director for specific application guidance. 

Currently, these specialized MOU provisions apply exclusively to Kikuchi College of Optometry graduates applying to the MSVS Program. Inquiries for potential new MOUs should be sent to the Program Director or the Admission Office for qualification.
