  • Peer Tutoring for Undergraduate Students
    • Subjects

We offer support in a wide variety of academic subjects, including accounting, American Sign Language, anatomy & physiology, biology, chemistry, communication sciences and disorders, finance, French, general elementary statistics, German, Japanese, math, music theory, physics, social statistics, Spanish, and writing.

If you don’t see your subject in this list, please let us know

    • Hours

Undergraduate peer tutoring takes place from 10:00 am until 10:00 pm Sunday-Thursday during the fall and spring semesters. We’re closed on university holidays.

Peer tutoring begins on the first day of classes and ends on the last day of classes. Because peer tutors are students too, we do not ask them to work during final exams, but if you meet with them throughout the term we know you’ll be ready for your exams!

    • Types of Tutoring

1-on-1 peer tutoring appointments are offered in person in Tran Library or via Zoom.

Book ahead of time when it fits your schedule. You can even book out your appointments for several weeks.

Bring a friend if you’d like.

Let your peer tutor know what you’d like to work on in your session and they will prepare for you so that your session will be productive.

Peer tutors will start the session by reviewing your goals and tailor your appointment toward meeting those goals.

Don’t see any times that work with your schedule? Please reach out to us to explore options.

Drop-in group peer tutoring is offered weekly for math, chemistry, biology, and writing.

Just show up! You’ll find the drop-in tutors on the second floor of Tran Library in the CLASS area at the designated times. All you have to do is sign in and sit down at their table and you’re in the group.

Start going the first week of the term and go every week, or pop in as needed. You can stay for as long as you’d like, from a few minutes to the whole two hours.

Some students like to make drop-in hours part of their regular study time for these subjects. It can be motivating to have others around who are working on similar things and it can remind you that in college you should study for every class every day, whether or not you have homework due or a test coming up.

Peer-guided study sessions for Biology 200 and Biology 201

A peer tutor who works closely with professors in the biology department plans structured learning activities to help you deepen your knowledge.

This is not a lecture – join us ready for fully engaged, active learning. We know that passive learning (such as re-reading notes and watching videos) results in very little learning. In these sessions you’ll be challenged to participate in learning strategies that actually work!

Want to be sure a particular topic gets covered or let us know how we can facilitate your experience? ahead of the session.

Messaging Peer Tutors with Short Questions About Course Content
You are welcome to message peer tutors with short questions about course content through the . The video (6:36) will show you how to do this.

Peer tutors guide you in effective strategies to learn as opposed to giving you the answers. When responding to your questions, they will either answer the questions you send in your message or they might instead decide that the most effective way for you to learn would be through a peer tutoring session. In that case, they will ask you to attend a peer tutoring session instead in order to best support you as you learn.

      Writing peer tutors:

Work with you to understand an assignment and help you generate ideas for a paper, but they cannot tell you exactly what to write for your assignments.

Read your paper to see if it is organized and makes sense, and help you clarify your ideas to improve flow and readability, but they cannot read your paper only for grammatical errors.

Guide you through the research process, including how to search for and evaluate sources, and direct you to style guides for citations and formatting and help you understand how to apply them in your papers, but they cannot do the research or format your papers for you.

Help you formulate an argument, challenge you to deepen your logic, point out where your evidence could be stronger, and guide you in polishing your language choices, but they cannot rewrite the paper for you.

Help you recognize patterns of errors in your writing and teach you how to fix them, and help you identify areas of strength and areas for improvement in your papers, but they cannot edit or proofread papers for you.

Work with you at any phase of the writing process, but they can’t do much if the first time you show up is the day the paper is due. Come see us the day you get the assignment and see how much stronger your writing can be if you give it a chance to evolve over time!
