The School of Pharmacy has developed and maintained reciprocal global experience/exchange programs with two Japanese Universities. This fall’s School of Pharmacy global exchange program with visiting Japanese pharmacy student, Renon, from Hoshi University in Tokyo, Japan, offered Pacific students a meaningful look into global pharmacy practice, pharmacy education, healthcare system, cultural differences, and the value of international collaboration. We look forward to welcoming 3 Japanese students from Musashino University in Spring 2026, providing additional exposure and opportunities for our students.
Expanding Views on Pharmacy Practice:
Students were inspired by Hoshi University’s Pharmacy program with emphasis on research and Renon’s passion for
research, including her work detecting cyanide in everyday products. They also learned about key differences between Japan and the U.S., from Japan’s six-year pharmacy program and education component and requirements, and healthcare system with the universal health insurance, to the absence of direct-to-consumer pharmaceutical advertising.
Cultural Moments & Shared Experiences:
Many highlights came from everyday experiences: sharing meals at Washington Square, exploring Portland, and introducing Renon to foods like mac n' cheese, ranch, and authentic Mexican dishes. Students also loved showing her American traditions, such as movie theater advertisements featuring talking candy, a high school football game, and even meeting backyard raccoons (her favorite animal).
Takeaways From the Exchange:
Working with an international student reminded participants of the importance of diversity and cultural perspective in healthcare. Students valued learning from Renon’s background and felt the experience broadened their understanding of global pharmacy practice.
Looking Ahead:
The three global student ambassadors who were interviewed for this article said they would eagerly participate in another global exchange, whether hosting again or studying abroad themselves. The friendships formed and insights gained made this exchange a standout experience.
