Seeking Staff and Faculty nominations for the Freedom of Expression Task Force
°ÅÀÖÊÓƵ values the free expression of ideas as the foundation of creative and scholarly endeavors and seeks to establish a statement of principle regarding freedom of expression at our institution that supports intellectual speech and debate. We seek also to establish a framework whereby such discourse may occur in an atmosphere of openness, respect, and civility that is befitting a scholarly community such as ours.
Significant research and work have already been conducted by a Freedom of Expression Task Force, approved by the University Council in October of 2022. In May 2025, the University Council agreed to reestablish a new task force during the 2025-26 academic year to continue this work by:
- Establishing a new charge
- Using the current, drafted Freedom of Expression Statement
- Involving two Board of Trustees members
The Provost, as chair of the University Council, is seeking nominations of faculty and staff to fill two faculty member positions and two staff member positions. One faculty member from the undergraduate division and one faculty member from the graduate and professional division will be selected by the Faculty Senate. The two staff representatives will be selected by the Staff Senate.
Given the scope of this project, the time commitment is estimated to be between 3-5 hours per month, but may vary depending on the progress of the work. We anticipate that the completion of this work will be spring of 2026.
Please self-nominate by providing a brief statement of interest explaining why you’re interested in serving on this committee, no later than the end of business on Friday, November 7.
of work that was approved at the October 9 University Council meeting.
Thank you,
