October is Audiology Awareness Month
Tinnitus is pretty common and affects approximately 20% of people. Usually, tinnitus is a result of an underlying condition, like hearing loss, an ear injury, or even injuries to the neck, back, or jaw. Some common medications can even cause tinnitus. About 90% of folx with tinnitus also have some kind of hearing loss. For some, tinnitus is random and comes and goes, but for others, it may be present at all times and may get so loud as to interfere with their ability to concentrate and relax.
For some, tinnitus may resolve with treatment of the underlying cause. For others, there is no “cure,” but that doesn’t mean there isn’t help. Audiologists manage tinnitus in collaboration with psychologists, neurologists, ENTs, physical therapists, dentists, and other medical professionals. Many patients learn to control their tinnitus through sound therapy, mindfulness, and even cognitive behavioral therapy.
The good news is most tinnitus is preventable. By protecting your ears, engaging in healthy physical exercise, eating well, and living a generally healthy lifestyle, you can greatly reduce the risk of having tinnitus in your future.
