May is National Speech-Language-Hearing Month!
Every year in May, the field of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) celebrates National Speech-Language-Hearing Month (NSLHM)! CSD professionals include speech-language pathologists (SLP), audiologists, and speech-language pathology assistants (SLPA).
At Pacific, we offer a Minor in Communication Sciences and Disorders for students interested in pursuing careers in SLP or Audiology. People who have already earned a Bachelor's degree but wish to take prerequisite courses for a CSD career can join our CSD Post-Bacc program. Students are then eligible to apply for Pacific's 3-year Doctor of Audiology (AuD) program or 2-year Master of Speech-Language Pathology program.
Audiologists work across the lifespan to provide hearing and balance healthcare. Assessment and treatment of hearing loss can involve dispensation and programming of hearing amplification technology, and other related hearing assistance devices. Professionals work in many settings, including schools, hospitals, private practices, universities, research labs, government and military agencies, and more.
SLPs also work across the lifespan to assess and treat differences and disorders across the "Big Nine" areas, as defined by the (ASHA). These "Big Nine" include: articulation/speech sound disorders, stuttering/cluttering, voice and resonance, receptive and expressive language, hearing, swallowing and feeding, cognition, social communication, and alternative/augmentative communication (AAC). SLPs work in schools, hospitals, private practices, skilled nursing facilities, home healthcare agencies, universities, and beyond.
