AuD Awareness Month #3!
We’re all exposed to loud noises with the world itself being quite loud. From hearing lawnmowers and power tools, to sitting in traffic while blasting music, we don’t always recognize when noise might be “too loud”. Even at concerts or sports games, we’re usually too engrossed in what’s happening. Loud noises close to your ears or consistent and repeated exposure to loud noises can lead to noise-induced hearing loss.
In fact, over 1-billion people are at risk for hearing loss due to unsafe listening practices and millions of others are exposed to hazardous noises and ototoxic chemicals in the workplace. But, you can prevent hearing loss by being proactive and reactive. For example:
- If there are loud noises that you can walk away from, you should put some distance between yourself and the noise.
- *Are you used to listening to your music at loud volumes? Consider turning it down.
- Can’t avoid being around loud noises? Try and plan out breaks.
- Use hearing protection.
*Follow the 60/60 rule when using headphones: 60% of your volume for 60 minutes at a time.
All of these efforts combined and individually can help protect your hearing and ear health. Additionally, there are many options for hearing protection, including AirPod transparency and noise cancellation settings, earplugs, earmuffs, or custom hearing protection. If you’re interested in learning more, consider making an appointment with an audiologist.
