芭乐视频鈥檚 May 2019 Commencement ceremony was doubly meaningful for Aurea Lomeli and her daughter, Leslie Lomeli.
Each received their bachelor of education degrees after studying together for two years.
鈥淚 cannot believe it,鈥 Aurea Lomeli said in a happy three-person phone call before the ceremony. 鈥淚 still think it鈥檚 not real. To walk across the stage and wait for my daughter 鈥 I have so many emotions.鈥
The pair, who lived together with Leslie Lomeli鈥檚 brother, sister and father, were the first in the family to earn college degrees, though a brother at Western Oregon University was close behind. Another sister was studying at Portland State University. Leslie鈥檚 father and Aurea鈥檚 husband, Ramiro Lomeli, has supported them all, she said.
鈥淗e鈥檚 super excited,鈥 she added.
The Lomelis completed Pacific鈥檚 bachelor of education in teaching and English language learning. The program is designed for students transferring from community colleges who want to become teachers in their home communities.
That鈥檚 perfect for the mother-daughter duo, who both want to be elementary teachers in the Woodburn area.
Though they didn鈥檛 set out to be college classmates, it was never a far-fetched idea, said Leslie Lomeli.
Aurea Lomeli had been taking classes at Chemeketa Community College, where Leslie Lomeli started after graduating from Woodburn High School in 2015. They transferred to Pacific to complete their bachelor鈥檚 degrees simultaneously.
鈥淢y mom has been going to school for as long as I can remember,鈥 she said. 鈥淎nd we both decided to be teachers.鈥
Aurea Lomeli took over: 鈥淚 told her, 鈥業 think you could be a good teacher. You should think about that.鈥欌
As they worked toward their degrees, mother and daughter did homework together and engaged in 鈥渉ealthy competition,鈥 Leslie Lomeli said.
鈥淚鈥檝e known forever that my mom is incredibly bright,鈥 she said.
Commencement was a celebration years in the making.
鈥淚t feels something like it鈥檚 a dream,鈥 said Aurea Lomeli. 鈥淵ou鈥檙e working for so long. I don鈥檛 even have words.
鈥淚t feels like I can see the light now.鈥
